Prague
Restaurants
The variety and number of places to eat and drink in Prague has increased
considerably in recent years. Pubs in Prague are either drinking pubs,
which usually serve food as well. Bars usually serve beer as well as wine
and spirits.
New restaurants are opening constantly, they offer standard western
dishes as well as Czech meals, but you can find also Chinese, Indonesian,
Indian and other restaurants.
WHAT TO EAT IN PRAGUE
Czech cuisine is typically central European, with German, Austrian,
Polish and Hungarian influences. It's very filling, usually with meat, dumplings, potato or rice topped with a heavy
sauce, and typically served
with a vegetable or sauerkraut.
Meat, poultry, fish, cabbage and potatoes are all prepared simply and
without strong spices. Meat tends to be fried, roasted, or oven-baked in stock.
Hot soups are the traditional start to a meal, and range from broth
with liver dumplings to cabbage soup with sausage.
The standard meal, offered in just about every restaurant is "knedlo,
vepro, zelo" (bread dumpling, sauerkraut and roast pork). Everything is
washed down with alcohol, mainly beer (and lots of it). It's not diet food.
WHAT TO DRINK IN PRAGUE
Czech beers are famous around the world. Pilsner and its various relations
originate in Bohemia.
The best known Czech beer is Pilsner - clear and golden, with a strong
flavour of hops. Another brands are f.e. Budvar, Gambrinus, Staropramen...
The usual drink is draught light beer, but a number of beer halls,
including U Fleku and U Kalicha also serve special strong dark lagers.
The Czech republic also produces wine, mainly in Southern Moravia.
In every restaurant you will find Becherovka, a bitter-sweet, yellow
herbal drink served as an aperitif and a liqueur.
