It
was first created by King Charles IV in 1348. The large
square, measuring 750m x 60m, originally functioned as a
horse market but over time evolved into Prague's central
boulevard lined with grand buildings - one of the most
popular places to stay in Prague and the center of the
business cultural communities. Many important historical
events in Prague's history took place in Wenceslas
Square - events such as the declaration of the first
Republic in 1918, protests against Soviet occupation in
1969, and the protest march in 1989 which started the
Velvet Revolution and eventually the end of communisium
in Europe. At the top of Wenceslas Square, the status
of St. Wenceslas on his horse cuts a striking
figure. This is King Wenceslas, murdered over a thousand
year ago by his brother. The statue was made by Josef
Vaclav Myslbek between 1887 and 1924. |
