Little Quarter - Lesser Town - Mala Strana

Lesser Town Prague

The Lesser Town (Mala Strana) is Prague's most perfectly preserved historic quarter. Its name comes from its position on the left (west) bank of the river Vltava, just below the Prague Castle. It was the smaller half of Prague - the half in which the king lived. Mala Strana started life in the 8th century as a market settlement. In 1257 Premysl Otakar II. granted it Town status and between 1360 and 1362 fortications were built by order of Charles IV. - known as the Hunger Wall. In the Middle Ages it was the dominant center of the German settlement of Prague. The famous Czech novlist Jan Neruda was born here. He lived in - and wrote about the lesser town.
